1899

Ida Louise Brooks (1872 - 1919) of Piqua, Ohio, served as Secretary to Berea College president William Goodell Frost. A signed, typescript letter from Paul Laurence Dunbar to Brooks is in her archived business correspondence. In the letter Dunbar indicated his willingness to distribute a Berea College circular. Brooks noted in pencil that she forwarded one hundred copies of "Excursion" to him.

Below the image of the March 15, 1899 Dunbar letter is a scan of the publication in question: "Horseback Excursion through Southern Mountains." The final sentence recommended the study of Dunbar's works in preparation for the 31-day outing. (To read all four pages of the brochure, click on the image.)
